Join the Humboldt Kolleg: A Call to Address Climate Change and Drive Sustainable Transformation

In the vibrant heart of Southeast Asia, a digital revolution was unfolding. Over the past five years, the region's embrace of rapid digitization, spurred by COVID-19, transformed it into a global tech leader. Internet usage and tech start-ups surged dramatically—85% more than in Europe and 65% more than in the US. This digital boom integrated small businesses into global supply chains and set the economy on a path to reach $1 trillion by 2030.

Yet, as the digital economy soared, the specter of climate change loomed large. Scientists warned that by 2030, average annual temperatures in Southeast Asia would rise by 1°C, with more severe increases to follow. This April, the region faced unprecedented heatwaves—Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam recorded their hottest days, and the Philippines its hottest night ever.

Recognizing the urgent need for action, the Humboldt Kolleg conference was called. Humboldtians and junior researchers from across Southeast Asia gathered, determined to devise transformative strategies for sustainability. Experts from diverse fields—earth sciences, urban planning, public health, agriculture, and economics—joined forces to tackle climate change head-on.

We invite you to join us in this critical dialogue and contribute to shaping the strategies that will define the region's response to climate change and drive sustainable development. Your participation is vital in forging a path towards a resilient and prosperous Southeast Asia.

Humboldtians and Humboldt Kolleg
Humboldtians are alumni of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowships and award programmes. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation aims to strengthen regional and professional networking between its alumni and spark junior researchers' interest in Alexander von Humboldt Foundation programmes and in Germany as a research location. Initiatives by individual Humboldtians or Humboldt alumni associations that serve this aim are eligible for financial support for the organisation of regional and expert conferences, known as Humboldt Kollegs, outside Germany.

Tari Remo (Remo Traditional Dance)
The Humboldt Kolleg will commence with a traditional Remo dance performance by Agus, a student from the Department of Communication Science at Universitas Ciputra Surabaya. The Remo dance, a vibrant welcome dance from East Java, embodies the dynamic spirit of the region, including areas like Surabaya, Jombang, Malang, and Situbondo. This dance portrays the bravery of a prince engaged in battle, characterized by lively footwork and dynamic movements. Dancers wear bells on their ankles, which sound with each step or stomp, adding to the rhythmic experience. Additionally, the dance features expressive gestures with the scarf or sampur, synchronized head movements, facial expressions, and horse-like steps, all of which contribute to its captivating performance.
