Kanjeng Raden Mas Hario (K.R.M.H.) Tatas Hardo Panintingjati Brotosudarmo, born in Pati in 1981, is a scientist in photosynthesis research in Indonesia. In 2011, he pioneered research on photosynthetic pigments, taking the theme of Indonesia's biodiversity and linking it to functional food and agriculture. The research work in the natural pigment field has influenced the government's policy on the use of synthetic food coloring to shift to more environmentally friendly solutions. For this contribution, the British Council awarded him the Professional Achievement Award, The UK Alumni Award 2017
Dr. Brotosudarmo is an alumnus of the Satya Wacana Christian University, Indonesia (S1 Chemistry, 2001), Ludwig Maximilian Universität München, Germany (S2 Chemical Physics, 2006), and the University of Glasgow, Scotland (S3 Molecular and Cell Biology, 2010). He has received prestigious awards, including Marie Curie RTN (2007-2010), Fellow of the Kavli Frontier of Science (2012 & 2016), 22nd TORAY Science and Technology Award (2016) from the Indonesia Toray Foundation, and Georg-Foster Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung/Foundation (2020-2021).
Dr. Brotosudarmo focuses on expertise in analyzing and determining natural pigments, especially carotenoids, using chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques, dealing with the application of these bioactive pigments, especially in food technology.

Interest
Extraction & Analysis of Natural Products
This project is focusing on the development of extraction & analytical methods for the determination of natural products from various local/exotic fruits and edible species of Indonesia. It includes natural colorants, such as chlorophyll, carotenoids, and anthocyanins, flavor & aroma compounds, and other metabolites that have economic values for food industries.
Food Applications & Community Impact
This project is focusing on designing and prototyping healthy and functional food products, using natural ingredients that are available locally in Indonesia. The project is also innovating solutions for minimizing food wastes by closely engaging with local home and small-medium enterprises, and by community outreaches. The project is designed to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), i.e. no poverty, no hunger, good health, quality education, life below water, life on land, and responsible consumption.
